Choosing an industrial pump starts with the system, not the catalogue. Flow rate and total dynamic head define the duty point, while the liquid, temperature, suction conditions and operating pattern determine which pump can reach that point reliably.
Define the real duty
Record normal, minimum and maximum flow rather than one nominal number. Calculate static head and friction loss across the expected range, then plot the system curve. A centrifugal pump should operate close to its best efficiency point during normal service, with enough margin for wear but not so much that it must be heavily throttled.
Match the pump to the liquid
Viscosity, solids, entrained gas, corrosiveness and temperature change the selection. Clean low-viscosity liquids often suit centrifugal pumps. Metering, high-viscosity transfer or a requirement for nearly constant volume may favour a positive displacement design. Wetted materials, elastomers and coatings must be compatible with both the process fluid and cleaning chemicals.
Check the installation
Available NPSH should exceed the pump’s required NPSH with a defensible margin. Review suction-pipe velocity, tank level, elevation and vapour pressure. Finally, specify seal arrangement, driver efficiency, control method, baseplate, instrumentation and the documentation needed for commissioning and maintenance.
